Four semi-permanent courts will be located on the sand directly in front of The Strand, with the redeveloped retail and lifestyle centre signing on to be the presenting partner of the courts.
CSGC CEO, Peter Doggett, said the selection of Coolangatta as the Beach Volleyball venue for the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games’ (GC2018) would be the talk of the town, and the addition of another free outdoor attraction in the area would bring even more opportunity to the local and business community.
These new volleyball courts will be a great free outdoor activity for local residents and visitors while promoting active and healthy lifestyles, said Mr Doggett. Thanks must go to The Strand for coming on board to sponsor the courts and deliver this new resource to the community.
Beach volleyball courts have proven to be very successful in other areas of the Gold Coast and will not only increase the traffic to our area, but benefit tourism and economy for local businesses in the Southern Gold Coast region especially with the additional appeal of being a Commonwealth Games venue.
Volleyball Australia CEO, Mathieu Meriaux, said their organisation was pleased by the announcement of the four courts to be installed at Coolangatta.
These types of facilities are a big part of our agenda as it is critical for the community to be able to access indoor and beach volleyball courts, said Mr Meriaux.
This particular beach is very close to our heart with GC2018 less than two years away. Building a permanent connection with our sport will give us great leverage to engage the community further and we would like to thank the City of Gold Coast, as well as Beach Volleyball Gold Coast for their contribution, he said.
Division 14 Councillor Gail O Neill, who has been a vocal advocate for more inclusion of GC2018 venues on the Southern Gold Coast, welcomed the beachside courts for Coolangatta.
These courts will be a fantastic addition to the Coolangatta lifestyle and will certainly put the destination on the map as a venue for the upcoming GC2018 Games.
Sarah Clasen, Marketing Manager at The Strand at Coolangatta said they will work alongside CSGC, local Beach Volleyball clubs and community organisations to attract events and tournaments to the courts, year round, in the lead up to GC2018.
We have such an iconic beachfront at Coolangatta with plenty of sand, so we’re pleased to be bringing a new activity to the region for social, amateur and professional players to enjoy now, during and beyond GC2018, Ms Clasen said.
The courts will operate on a bring your own ball basis and will be open to the public 7 days a week. The semi-permanent structure will allow them to be removed for other beach events if required.
